‘I was in shock, but…’: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta calls attack a ‘cowardly attempt,’ vows to continue public service

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked on Wednesday during a public hearing at her Civil Lines camp office. In her first statement after the incident, she described the assault as a “cowardly attempt” on her resolve to serve Delhi and said she was initially in shock but is now feeling better. She urged well-wishers not to visit her, promising to resume duties soon. “Public hearings and the resolution of people’s problems will continue with the same seriousness and commitment as before. Your trust and support are my greatest strength,” she said.

The attack occurred around 8:15 am when a man attempted to pull the CM’s hand, causing a jostle in which her head touched the edge of a table. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva confirmed the sequence of events. Gupta stated she will continue to serve the public with even greater energy and dedication.

The accused, 41-year-old Sakariya Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai from Rajkot, Gujarat, was immediately arrested. Police officials said he has a criminal record and was previously booked in five cases, including a knife attack. He is currently being jointly interrogated by the Intelligence Bureau and Delhi Police’s Special Cell.

Delhi Police have registered an FIR under sections 109 (attempt to murder), 132 (assault on a public servant), and 221 (obstruction of public servant). Authorities described the incident as planned, noting that the accused arrived in Delhi two days prior and conducted reconnaissance near the CM’s residence and camp office. CCTV footage and mobile phone evidence are under examination.

Sakariya’s mother, Bhanuben Sakariya, said her son is apolitical and traveled to Delhi to protest a Supreme Court order on stray dogs, describing him as someone who “loves dogs, cows and birds.” Security measures for CM Gupta, who is under ‘Z’ category protection, may be reviewed following the investigation. Further inquiry is ongoing.
